Doing some foundational research on an Eisler/Brecht topic. A coincidence on Tuesday was that, when I was looking for the original German for some Brecht poems in the library, one volume of the poetry opened to selections from the play Baal. I was aware that David Bowie had acted in a BBC production of that. Then, Wednesday morning, there was an article from Jacobin about David Bowie that compared some of his work with that of Brecht. The Cambridge Companion to Brecht was mentioned in the article. I looked that up on the university library website and found an electronic copy that contained some useful articles. This project has a different (somewhat less academic) feel to it than the previous one. This should keep occupied for the next little while.

I watched Baal, which is meant to be pretty unsympathetic, and it was, but it was interesting nonetheless. The next video that came up was an interview with Bowie from 1999. In the interview he said that, originally, he envisioned himself as a writer of songs for musicals that other people would sing. He felt uncomfortable with being a stage performer, so he eventually invented characters to get himself into the role of performer since he couldn't find others who would sing his songs. As it worked out, the last project he worked on was the musical Lazarus (his only musical), which finishes its run (posthumously for him) tonight.
