Not perfect, but ...

I had hoped to have school-related obligations out of the way by July 1 so that I could devote the rest of the summer to my own work. I figured that devoting a significant amount of my time to course preparation, meetings, and emails during the first 6 weeks of my "summer" "break" should have been enough. I guess not.

Of course, it hasn't just been about school. My father visited twice last week, and my partner and I went to visit friends of his family for July 4. This past week my partner had eye surgery and experienced severe pain during the first day after that. Now that we have that resolved, only about two weeks of the time that I had hoped to have to myself have been eaten up, but whatever.

Nonetheless, through persistent efforts (and through having no real social life of my own), I have managed to make some progress on some projects that have been stalled for some time.

Yesterday I also did something I had been thinking about for a while: I crafted an open-ended "away" message for my work email that says that I will be checking email about once a week until the fall semester begins, and thanks for your patience while you await my reply. I'm tired of feeling that I am supposed to be immediately responsive to everyone's concerns while being paid for only 9 months out of the year: fuck that. If people are so interested in having me be more immediately "available" (as administrators like to say these days), they can invest in that availability by increasing my salary from (what the payfoll department calls) 9/12 to 12/12. Until such time as that happens, assalaamu 'alaikum and have a nice summer. ;-)

Next year I plan to activate my email away message as soon as finals are over and to turn it off at midnight before the first day of classes. I should do the same during the other breaks.

Peace,

KH
