Yesterday and last night

Given what I wrote yesterday, especially my reflections about connections between the music of White Lies and my experiences following my mother's death, it is interesting that it turns out that my partner's mother had a health crisis yesterday morning and, since that time she was taken from her residential health care facility to the emergency room, and from there to a hospice room in the hospital. All of the family who were within driving distance gathered at the hospital yesterday afternoon and evening, and I received a call from my partner during my 8 a.m. class, informing me that his mother had passed during the night.

One unusual detail about yesterday was that I left my cell phone behind on the dining room table. I usually have it with me on campus, but as I was in the car I realized that I had left it behind. I generally receive very few calls, so I decided to leave it behind rather than turn around to get it. I don't usually come to campus on Tuesday, and this semester I am sharing my office with an adjunct colleague for portions of Tuesday and Thursday, which is why I was finishing up some work in Starbucks yesterday afternoon. That is where I was writing on LJ.

When I got home I saw that there was a voice mail on the land line and one on my cell, plus a couple of missed calls on my cell. That's when the day took a really unexpected turn.

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ

Peace,

kh
