I listened to a lesson on the first chakra by the astrologer whose work I've been exploring recently. He makes use of two affirmations during the lesson. What is different about his approach from what I have experienced in the past (unless I've been misinterpreting something there) is that he uses the affirmations to provoke negative emotional reactions. While they articulate an ideal state for the healthy function of the particular chakra, it is expected that there will be deep-seated resistance to the content of the affirmation. It is in admitting our emotional reactions--whatever they may be, and whether or not they appear to be tied to specific memories--that we can learn more about where we actually are with respect to the given issue. This seems to be a dialectical approach, rather than one of trying to force-feed a superficial sense of "positivity" that can easily begin to be experienced as an attack on where we are right now.
