Going back to my first explorations of Tarot, most people use (or at least begin with) the famous Rider-Waite deck. The color palette of that deck has never appealed to me, so I chose something softer and more inviting. As it turns out, the Angel deck that I chose is patterned after a deck that predates the Rider-Waite by a few centuries, the Marseille Tarot. Some purists insist on using it in preference to the Rider-Waite or Crowley's Thoth Tarot. In any event, it turns out that Meditations on the Tarot made use of the Major Arcana of the Marseille Tarot. Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky has also focused his attention on the Marseille Tarot. I have ordered his version of the Marseille Tarot as well as an edition of the Waite deck that resotores Pamela Colman Smith's original color palette, which is easier on my eyes than the popular, recolored version.
