Hor Rejjan

Today I revisited the Ramadan Evening video by Hor Rejjan that I had previously posted to FB. I found that the lyrcis were on the YouTube page and I ran them through Google Translate. The song is about the restoration of the Bey mosque in Sarajevo, the resumption of the ezan and of public observance of Ramadan following the war.

In poking around online about the Bey mosque I came across a video from Feb 2012 in which children and young teens were reciting stories, hadith, and Qur'an. They sat in the front of the mosque while an older teenage girl acted as MC, introducing each of the children by name. Some of them were good, and some struggled with memorization, but the atmosphere was very patient and supported. The adults looked on from the other side of the mosque.

The first chorus whose work I found was Hor Hazreti Hamza. I was able to download one of their albums, but of the two groups I prefer Rejjan, who seem to be significantly better musicians. Hor Rejjan's latest video is about Srebrenica, and it was released earlier this month. It's beautifully done and quite powerful:

The comments show that some strong ethnic hatreds persist, particularly (of course) between Serbs and Bosnians.

Peace,
